Canoe say Canoe 2

Phase 2 of Canoe Building involves attaching chine logs and gunnels.

Gunnels provide structural integrity for the dorsal part of the canoe.

Chine logs give structural integrity to the lower part of the canoe as well as creating more surface to adhere the bottom to. More on that later.

Here are the two halves of the canoe body after the 4" PVC clamps have been removed. (Clamps donated by Sandoval Roustabout Services)

These are made of 1x2 stock in 16 foot lengths. Pine works really well because it flexes. This is the moment of truth. If the wood cracks or splits at this point... well, its back to the ole' drawing board.


Fortunately the Chines and Gunnels held. They are stretched over a center framework with the ends tying drywall screws together. They will be removed after the adhesive cures.
